How we verify
A badge on Renovexus means one specific check passed on a specific date. Here is what we check and what we don't.
| Check | Source | Shown as |
|---|---|---|
| NJ Home Improvement Contractor registration is active (North Jersey) | NJ Division of Consumer Affairs lookup | “NJ HIC registration active”, with the license number and the date checked |
| Virginia contractor license is active (Northern Virginia) | Virginia DPOR Board for Contractors lookup | “VA contractor license active”, with the license number and the date checked |
| Maryland Home Improvement Commission license is active (Maryland) | Maryland Home Improvement Commission lookup | “MHIC license active”, with the license number and the date checked |
| DC home improvement contractor license is active (Washington, DC) | DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection lookup | “DC home improvement license active”, with the license number and the date checked |
| Georgia residential or general contractor license is active (Georgia) | Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors lookup | “GA contractor license active”, with the license number and the date checked |
| Business exists at the listed location and is open | Google Business Profile | Address, phone, rating with review count |
| Business actually offers the service | The contractor's own website | Service list |
How the Renovexus Score works
Every listing gets a score from 0 to 100, computed the same way for everyone from the public data above. Paying for a Featured spot does not change it. Hub pages rank pros by this score (Featured spots sit on top and are labeled).
| Part | Points | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| State license | 30 | Full points only if we matched an active state license or registration and recorded the check date. Expired or unmatched earns 0. |
| Rating | 30 | Google rating adjusted for review count (a Bayesian average that starts every pro at 4.3 stars weighted as 10 reviews), scaled from 3.5 stars (0) to 5.0 (full). |
| Review volume | 20 | Logarithmic: about 200 reviews earns full points, so the first reviews count most. |
| Website | 10 | The contractor's own website describes the service we list them for. |
| Profile | 10 | Hours (3), at least 3 photos (3), phone (2), address (2) on the Google profile. |
Why a rating adjustment? A pro with three 5-star reviews should not outrank one with 150 reviews at 4.8. The adjustment keeps small samples from dominating.
What a badge does not mean
- We do not guarantee work quality, prices or outcomes.
- We have not inspected insurance unless the profile says so.
- Registration status can change after our check date. Always confirm on the state lookup before signing a contract.
Paid placement
Contractors can pay for a “Featured” spot. Featured listings are always labeled and never get a verification badge they haven't earned.
Corrections
Contractors can claim their profile to fix details. Anyone can report an error from the profile page.
